5 simple ways to notice others to grow positive influence
When I go do a talk on community engagement in the workplace or in a town or in a city, one of my favorite things to talk about is the importance of “noticing others.”
I give the example of how no one wants to work for the boss that walks right past this in the mornings when he first gets to work. We don’t want to be on teams where we don’t acknowledge one another.
We all want to be noticed and there is a connection with someone when they acknowledge you.
Imagine being at a party and no one notices. You’re walking through and it’s as though you’re at this party all by yourself until you recognize that someone is waving you over.
The next morning who do you remember at the party? Who do you feel the most connected to at that party?
I want to give you 5 simple ways to notice others in this party called life:
Send them a handwritten note. I try to send out 3 a day. It’s my way of saying I notice you. And I love when I walk in someone’s office and send that note hanging on their wall.
Wave at folks when they drive by. I try to wave at everyone. There have been times I have bumped into people in my town and they thank me for waving at them because they were having a hard day. You never know when that simple wave could be the difference maker in someone’s day.
Stop by their office just to say hello. As I’m walking through town, I will stop in stores and say hello to folks and just check-in.
On social media, I give out my kindness award. This is my way of letting people know I notice how they treat me and others. I also use this to celebrate what I want to see more of in my town - kindness!
Using social media again, you can stop by people’s pages on Facebook and just leave a kind word.
I would say growing positive influence as a leader or building community starts with noticing others.
In your noticing, find ways to help people achieve some of the wins they want for their lives. Help them live out their greatest story.
Yo. Thanks for reading. I wrote this on your iPhone in the Squarespace app. Thinking about coffee.
