26 Teachers Share Tips

Howdy. Hope you have had plenty of reasons to smile so far this week.

Thanks for opening up my Monday’s List. This month I’m sharing responses I got back from teachers on what they’re consistent in to be the best teachers.

I’m a big ole fan of teachers. Thankful for these responses.

I want to see 3 things happen from this email, at least one of them - you learn, be inspired and community happens.

Next month I’m having leaders respond to this question of what are they consistent in to be the best leader.

Check out my podcast. This month I will be sitting down with educators.

Putting God first and prayer! That way I’m staying accountable, organized, able to walk in the fruits of the spirit and keep my mind sharp with always learning new things. Every student that I come in contact with matters and with God’s help I am able to help them have a successful education and build a lasting relationship with them as well as the parents.

There’s many things that I do, but the most important thing is build relationships with my students. Having daily conversations, talking about their interests, getting to know as much as I can about them is essential because relationships is what teaching is all about. I talk to them throughout the day as much as I can. Instead of sending them by themselves to lunch or specials which I could do, I walk along side of students, this time is often when students feel comfortable to talk to me. I want to build the level of trust so that students feel comfortable to not only work hard, but also joke and have fun with me, share their concerns, feel comfortable to question things, and have real conversations. This is the measure of my success.

Building relationships with my students and their parents. I have found that it is the one most important thing I can do to help support success, academically, socially, and emotionally. It is imperative that my students feel safe, heard, and cared for beyond academics. My parents know that we are a team and I can’t do the work without them. They know they have a partner in me and that their child is cared for and prayed for when they become one of “my kids.” So much of what I do everyday is built on trust. I can’t teach unless trust is the foundation. If my students don’t feel loved chances are they are not going to learn from me; they will merely just survive. If my parents don’t trust me, chances are they won’t support the journey when hard things come up.

Building trust and making sure they know they are loved no matter what. If all your needs are met, you can focus to learn. I believe building a relationship is foundational to establishing the best learning environment.

To be at school every single day. I encourage the students to be there every day if possible to receive the instruction that I give. Therefore, I should be there to give that instruction.

Building a community family with my students is one of the things I do daily. We have morning meetings every day to build our classroom family. We talk about how we can support and help others as well as discuss any issues the students may have concerns about.

I try really hard to “hear” my students, either verbally or non-verbally. I want to know them from their classroom worries to accomplishments outside of school.

I consistently work hard on being a better teacher every day. I try my best to reach each and every student academically as well as building a relationship with them on their interests. Over the years I have learned that these things are the key to building a classroom family and a learning environment for them to feel loved and comfortable with myself and their peers.

The one practical thing that I work to be consistent at in an attempt to be the best teacher that I can be, with the help of God. Daily, I act as a role model walking in a spirit of loving, nurturing, empathetic and patience. Because every student\child will have his or her own unique struggles.

One thing I like to be consistent at doing to be the best teacher is to listen daily to my students….whether it be a story they want to tell me, an academic trouble they are having, a need they might need…really just anything! I want them to know I care and that I am there for them and hear them. Build relationships with my students daily!!

Keep routines! My morning routine before work sets me up for the day and prepares my mindset, my routines at school keep me and my students ready to learn and as calm as kindergarten can be and my after school routines give me space to decompress and relax.

Effective communication is key! As a PK- 4th grade SPED teacher, I work with 10-15 teachers at a very large elementary school. It is important that I communicate the needs and accommodations for my students to their general education teachers. I also have to ensure that those needs are being met.  This includes verbal, electronic,  and in-person check-ins as well as providing ideas and resources that they can use to help any student that may be struggling in their classroom.

Being present. I fill that to be the best for my students I need to be aware, engaged, enthusiast, understanding, responsive not just reactive. They need me. I might be the only person that day(or week) that hears them, and at the very least tries to understand what they are going through. I can’t miss the cues. I need to be in the moment.
