How to build community beyond Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Youtube
I’m not going to stop using these platforms anytime soon. I don’t think.
I could have put LinkedIn on this list too but that would have made this title really long.
Again, I don’t think but I may not use them as much but I have been thinking how to simplify my life. And, I really can’t simplify it without considering doing away with some of these platforms.
It’s hard to manage them all and am I really making strides kind of using them. Would I be better off only using one or two of them. If so which ones do I use.
Well, I was thinking this morning what would building community look like beyond social media?
People are doing it all the time i.e. building community without using social media.
Note, communities do not have to be thousands or millions of people.
Here is the definition I found for community: By definition, a community is any group of people within a larger society united through a common location, interest or characteristic.
A group is 2 or more people.
Now, lets think how to build community beyond social media.
Get on the phone. Call 2 or more people you have a common interest in and say weekly you all will have a phone call around your common interest. You now have a community.
Build community through a weekly email blast. I have an email list that I’m not very consistent with but it’s a group of people who want to stay motivated.
Every Saturday I can go to one of my local coffee shops here in my town and there is a group of 5 people that are there every time. I’m not sure of the interest but I’m sure there is one and they have built that community through gathering at the coffee shop.
On Thursday nights here in my town there is a group that meets up at another local coffee shop and they ride bikes together on gravel and dirt roads. They simply invite others to be a part of the ride. After the ride they will sit in the parking lot and chop it up over a cold drink. There is no social media just texting folks to invite them to join them.
No social media. People are building community.
You can do the same. Don’t feel like social media is your only avenue to building community.
Thanks for reading.
I wrote this on my IPad in the Squarespace app sitting in my sun room with loud banging going on with the roofers.
Headed to finish my coffee and talking with the wifey.
