GuthrieAmerica Story: Jeffrey Mathews
Tell the world your name.
Jeffrey Mathews
Where were you born specifically?
I was born on June 30th, 1995 in Norman OK (Sooner born and Sooner bred!! Lol).
When did you move to Guthrie?
My family and I moved to Guthrie in August 2006 from Moore Oklahoma.
What's your favorite Guthrie-related memory?
Guthrie celebrates BIG. They know how to throw a party whether it’s 89ers, Homecoming, or Red Brick Nights. However, I think my favorite memory was made this year at the Victorian Walk. I got to be with an awesome lady (Cheyenne McCrary) walking around this beautiful town and talking with a lot of the students (I am a student minister at Community Church).
What's the best part about living in Guthrie?
It’s a family. I come from a big family, a loving family and I find that Guthrie is very similar. I love walking around downtown, running into people and getting to chat with them.
What does Guthrie have that other towns don't?
Guthrie has this pride that’s not bad pride. It’s a “I am proud to be apart of this community” pride. I can see that through the celebrations. It’s something that sometimes I don’t notice until I bring friends or family from out of town and they wish that their community was as warm and fun loving as ours.
Are you a GHS alumni?
Yes I am. I am very proud of it too! Class of 2013!
Where do you currently work and how long?
I work at Community Church on I35 and Seward. I’ve been working there since I graduated college and attending church there since I was 12. I am the Director of Student Ministries.
What do you love most about your job?
Being able to share this Good News (The Gospel) with people here at this town and just getting to love them!
If you grew up in Guthrie and had your first job here...where? Did you get fired?
My very first job ever was here at Avalanche the snow cone stand. I think it had different owners at the time, and I didn’t get fired. It was just a summer job.
Do you have family here? If so explain...:
I do. My parents, siblings, and one set of grandparents live here. My dad is the Executive Pastor and Worship Pastor at Community, mom works at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, siblings are in the schools rocking the sports life, and my grandparents attend Community plus help in our Student Ministries and Prayer groups.
How did you first hear or learn about the GuthrieAmerica brand?
I noticed the shirts, got curious, then I ran into THE Heady Coleman at a football game.
Why do you wear GuthrieAmerica tee?
Remember that pride I mentioned? I’m proud to rep my town!
What are your favorite things to do in Guthrie?
Walk around the downtown area, get some coffee and go antiquing with my lady friend!
How would you define what it means when you hear or say COMMUNITY WINS?
Well, with the Church (The collective people who follow Christ) we are known as the “Body of Christ.” That means we have individual gifts given to us to use to glorify God and make Him known. Similarly I think this community called Guthrie is a group of people using there gifts and talents to benefit this town.
Anything significant about your life you would like to share?
I try to live my life loving people as best I can. I want to first and foremost make Christ known from the second I initiate a conversation. I look forward to what God is going to do in this community and through it!
Lastly, we love SHOUT OUTS! Who do you want to give a shout out to?
The staff and elders at Community Church, my family, and the antique shops in town. Cheyenne and I greatly appreciate their stuff!!
Wait, one more. What does it mean to CHOOSE GUTHRIE?
To be. Live here. Grow here. Have fun here. Be here.
