STORY

"The funny things kids say, being silly with them, and doing the unexpected!

What's your name?

Christy Gilbert

Which school do you teach at?

St. Mary's

How long have you been teaching?

23 years

Where did you go to college?

University of Central Oklahoma

What's your favorite school supply?

Oooooh! Color! I love colored copy paper, colored card stock, colored dry erase markers, colored sharpies, colored ink pens...do you get the idea? Faves are aqua and red!

Favorite thing about teaching?

The funny things kids say, being silly with them, and doing the unexpected! I absolutely love being creative, seeking out how kids are smart and showing them that none of us should ever try to fit in a box.

Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

Mrs. Fumia!!! I had her for second and fourth, and I could never remember how to pronounce her name, Mrs. Fumia or Mrs. Mufia. I grew up in California, so no one knows her here.

What's your one tip for teaching?

Be real.

If you could change one thing about education, what would you change?

For the love of all that is good in this world, I would eliminate the bureaucracy of having to prove that you know what you're doing. It takes so much time to document what you're teaching, when you're teaching it, how you're teaching it, to whom you're teaching it, etc. that by the time you teach it you could have taught five other things!

If you didn't teach, what would you do?

If I wasn't teaching, I would either illustrate children's books or do architectural design. I still might do the prior in my retirement years.

One thing that makes you smile?

Hugs and coffee!
